【Special Topic】Green Anniversary - World Earth Day
Every year on April 22, World Earth Day is marked to raise global awareness and concern for environmental issues.
Two key figures contributed to the initiation of World Earth Day. Senator Gaylord Nelson had long been concerned about the deteriorating environment caused by the rapid development of the United States. Inspired by the student anti-war movement, in 1969 he announced the idea for a teach-in on college campuses to raise public consciousness about air and water pollution. Another key figure, young activist Denis Hayes, joined and escalated the action, which eventually attracted media attention and quickly spread across the country. On April 22, which is a weekday chosen between spring break and final exams to maximize participation, 20 million Americans marched to make their voices heard. This day in 1970 marked the start of World Earth Day, and the success of the campaign has led to a tradition of environmental events being held on April 22.
For the 53rd anniversary of World Earth Day this year, EARTHDAY.ORG has announced the theme of “Invest in our planet” for 2023, emphasizing the need for governments, businesses and organizations to engage in green innovations and practices that promote the balance between resource development and environmental protection. Citizens can also take practical steps to 'invest' in the planet by choosing eco-friendly recipes, using eco-friendly cleaning products, watching Earth Week live and so on. Start with the little things you and I can do, together we can make a difference to the environment.
