James Gibson started as Chief Executive of BLAKE (Sir Peter Blake Trust) in February 2018. BLAKE is the legacy organisation of the great New Zealand sailor and environmentalist Sir Peter Blake, and delivers a range of environmental education and environmental leadership programmes. James’ passion for environmental leadership, especially the need for future generations to take up the challenge to improve our environmental performance, motivated him to take up the role at BLAKE. In James’ time at BLAKE the organisation has developed and scaled several new programmes, including NZVR, a marine education programme in schools using underwater 360° footage displayed through virtual reality headsets. The programme now reaches 40,000 students annually. Prior to his time at BLAKE James worked in senior roles at Air New Zealand, including Head of Sustainability, where he led the development and implementation of their award-winning sustainability strategy, as well as developing successful partnerships with both the Department of Conservation and Antarctica NZ. He has also spent time as GM Partnerships & Communication at Sport New Zealand, with responsibility for managing Sport NZ’s relationship with the sports sector, as well as their brand, communications, events, and partner capability work. James loves spending time in the outdoors, especially hiking and open water swimming, is learning to surf, and enjoys a social game of golf or cricket. He is married with two young daughters.
