Indonesian Women in River Network: A Good Practice for Implementing Gender and Environmental Management in Indonesia
Indonesia is an archipelago country with almost 6.000 rivers in mainlands or small islands. History talks that Indonesian ancients settled their live in river bank. Nowadays, with the incoming Digital 4.0 Era and rapidly densely populated area in Indonesia makes the rivers in bad condition. With that condition, many issues that local communities are facing in building a sustainable society in this SDGs era.
Most rural women and some urban women has lack of environment literacy that is linked to water resources. Water resources especially river environment cannot be separated from development issues in all sectors. Water is also a key input for all sectors of development in food, energy, agriculture, industry, health and all economic joints. Water, which is one of the most basic needs for human beings (not only men but also women), applies as a social good and has transformed into a very strategic economic commodity as well as a global ecological threat. The guarantee of adequate water availability is a key element in the fulfillment of water resources in terms of quantity, quality, spatial distribution and continuity. In many families, the burden of collecting water falls to women and girls. Without access to clean water, they cannot achieve their potential to learn, work and care for their families. And it will affect the happiness degree in the family.
One of it’s main project’s running whicht implements education for sustainable development that integrates environmental, social, and economic dimensions of Sustainable Development is Indonesian Women in River Network (Srikandi Sungai Indonesia/SSI) School which directed by Surani Hasanati, S.Si, M.Sc. (2015-2019).
SSI inisiated in 2015 and launched by the Ministry of Women Empowerment and Child Protection of Republic Indonesia in early of 2016 with regards for Indonesian Women Heroes Day, World Water Day, Environment Day and National River Day Celebration. Member of SSI are volunteers from various profession such as academician, Government, Community, experts and Private Sector. SSI is committed to preserve river environment due to climate change by various programes related to women empowerment and child environment literacy education. SSI collaborates with Pentahelix partners to support SSI program activities: education and campaign, natural conservation, economy creative in five mainlands of Indonesia (Java, Sumatera, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Papua) also small island like Bali.
SSI developing participatory collaboration Trans-partnership approach in river management called CREAM (Collaborative Responsibility Environmental Action Management). It is a Holistic synergy and sustainable river management among Community, University, National and Local Government, Private, Expert. Thus, in 2016, SSI achieved "strategic media partner" by UNESCO for Water Education, Capacity Building and Awareness: changing the mindset and behavior of the population on water especially women and children.
