Ministry of Environment — "Food Spirit Onmyoji" Real-World Puzzle Game
To promote food conservation and raise public awareness of food waste, the Ministry of Environment has partnered with the Red House to
launch "Food Spirit Onmyoji." This immersive puzzle-solving adventure combines environmental education with the growing popularity of
interactive mystery games. Through this innovative initiative, participants are encouraged to adopt food-saving practices while exploring the
cultural and historical landscape of the Ximending district.
The event officially kicked off on 18 May 2026, in celebration of International Museum Day. It invites both domestic and international
visitors to step into the role of an Onmyoji. As players venture through the historic district, their mission is to capture "Food Spirits" born
from wasted food, all while learning how to incorporate net-zero green living into their daily routines.
According to the Ministry of Environment, the Red House was originally established as a public market during the Japanese colonial
period and has long been intertwined with the city’s food culture and urban development. Building upon this historical and architectural
significance, the game uses an innovative storytelling approach centered on the concept that "wasted food transforms into spirits."
By blending environmental education with urban exploration, the game offers a captivating experience that helps participants rediscover
the value of food and the importance of resource circulation.
Guided by in-game characters, players explore the surrounding neighborhood to solve a series of puzzles that gradually reveal the
environmental impacts of food waste. Along the way, participants learn practical food-saving actions, such as ordering appropriate
portions, managing ingredients effectively, and taking home leftovers.
The event runs until 16 August 2026. Participants can join for free by scanning a QR code at designated locations within the Red House.
In addition to receiving limited-edition themed stickers (while supplies last), players have the chance to win exciting prizes through a
three-tier reward program.
Upon completing the challenges, players who add the Ministry of Environment’s official LINE account can enter an instant coffee giveaway.
Additionally, a monthly prize draw will award NT$500 convenience store e-vouchers throughout the campaign period. Finally, participants
who finish the game and submit a feedback survey will be entered into a grand prize drawing, which features an iPhone 17, a household
food waste processor, and various other premium prizes.
The Ministry emphasized that the game features a bilingual Chinese-English interface to welcome both residents and international
tourists. This highlights Taiwan’s innovative approach to blending cultural tourism with environmental education. By merging digital technology
with real-world community spaces, the initiative aims to boost public engagement in food conservation through an immersive, youth-oriented
experience.
The Ministry sincerely invites the public to explore historic Ximending through this interactive adventure. By practicing food waste reduction
at the source, participants can directly contribute to the promotion of net-zero green living.
