【Internship Site Introduction】Izumi City Crane Museum (Kagoshima-ken, Japan)
Located in Izumi City, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, the Izumi City Crane Museum is situated within one of the world’s most significant
wintering grounds for migratory cranes. Each year, the area welcomes tens of thousands of cranes, including nearly half of the global
populations of the Hooded Crane (Grus monacha) and the White-naped Crane (Antigone vipio). The landscape is distinguished by the
close coexistence of large migratory waterbirds, agricultural farmlands, and residential communities, demonstrating a unique
model of harmonious coexistence between people and wildlife.
The site has been designated as a National Special Natural Monument of Japan and has received dual international recognition
as both a Ramsar Wetland and a Ramsar Wetland City. Building upon its rich natural heritage, Izumi City has successfully promoted
local agricultural products and regional development initiatives that emphasize living in harmony with nature.
Environmental education has been deeply embedded in the local community for more than six decades. For over 60 years, junior high
school students have participated in annual crane population surveys, fostering long-term citizen engagement in wildlife conservation.
The city has also established the “Crane Guide Master” certification program, through which student volunteers receive specialized
training to serve as environmental interpreters and visitor guides.
In addition, conservation awareness is promoted through the “Crane City Fairy Tale Award,” which transforms conservation themes into
illustrated stories and educational materials for children. Izumi City has further strengthened international collaboration through
partnerships with conservation organizations, including cooperative initiatives with the Wild Bird Society of Taiwan.
