【Special Topic】1st Environmental Youth Leader Project of Taiwan EPA - Iain Chen Li
Just like human rights, the environment should be protected and respected.
One summer, a trip around Taiwan changed my values. During the trip, we walked downstream along the rivers in the mountains. The clear water of the streams in the sparsely populated mountains and the polluted and muddy water, together with the drought caused by the water crisis, aroused my passion and desire to contribute to the environment and education. Since then, I have been investigating many educational and environmental sustainability projects for the public welfare, from teaching English and cleaning beaches with organizations to organizing my own international water conservation projects and research.
Thirst Project is the state’s largest youth water charity that works to terminate the global water crisis. I founded its first division in Asia, connecting youths in Asia to raise international water awareness. I led my team to fundraise for wells in eSwatini. We cooperates with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, eSwatini ambassador, and Kiwanis to coordinate speeches to 4000+ audiences.
Also, I am the founder of Taiwan Youth Water Union, which aims to create a more aware generation that collaborates to form a stronger force to solve Taiwan's water problems. I recruited and led city youth representatives, connect Taiwanese high schools to educate water-saving tips, organize events such as Run For Water and Educate the Farmers, scrutinize public water facilities and design water curriculums, and educate youths through speeches and the internet.
Also, I initiated a hashtag #StopTossingUrButt movement dedicated to remove cig butts on the streets and promote smoking awareness. My team coordinated a 250 students massive street cleaning event, organize lectures, rally citizens to pick cig butts on streets, and the movement reached 5524 youths across 11 different cities.
